NIGHTMARE (1970's horror comic mag)

Skywald created some of the best horror comic mags in the 70's. In some ways, their titles were BETTER than Creepy and Eerie from Warren Publishing. The art and stories were darker, gorier, and much more morbid than lots of the stuff from Warren. Sadly, the company only lasted for about 5 years. NIGHTMARE was their flagship title, and then later Psycho and Scream followed (we'll write more about those titles later on). Try to find ANY copies of NIGHTMARE as its one of the best! They're very expensive though, so be prepared to spend a lot to get any of these.

MESSIAH OF EVIL - creepy 70's horror

This has to be one of the most creepy 70's horror movies ever. Sadly, most people don't even know it exists. It's kind of a zombie movie, but it's really hard to explain exactly what it is at the same time. You just have to see it to appreciate how unique and creepy it truly is! Code Red DVD just released an excellent special edition DVD of it which you MUST get before it goes out of print!

TWISTED TALES (1982) comic series

Another great and almost forgotten horror comic series is TWISTED TALES from the early 80's. These were new stories, not pre-code 50's stuff. Sadly, this series only lasted 10 issues. Almost all of them had great covers from Richard Corben and Berni Wrightson, and also John Pound who did the Garbage Pail Kids art! These are still available at affordable prices and we totally recommend them!

Vault of Evil and other shockers from Marvel's 70's horror assault!

In the 70's, Marvel comics decided to re-print classic pre-code horror tales from the 50's in brand new titles such as VAULT OF EVIL, CHAMBER OF CHILLS, TOMB OF DARKNESS, BEWARE, DEAD OF NIGHT, etc. They all had great new covers and were a lot of fun! They're getting harder to find these days, but you can still get many of them for about 2 or 3 bucks each sometimes. Definitely worth collecting!

Tales Too Terrible To Tell - early 90's collection of 50's horror!

TALES TOO TERRIBLE TO TELL was a series of horror comics that collected the old pre-code stuff from the 50's. They also had great articles on the history of the actual companies that made these essential in my opinion! Tons of material collected in these back issues. They're getting kinda hard to find, but check ebay as there's always people selling them for a decent price. Totally worth it for pre-code horror fans! We're happy to say we're only missing one issue of this series! There were 11 total.

As the second SCAREMAKER album takes form, I've really had conflicting ideas on lyrical content. Some would say, "It's just 'death metal'", but I'm the one in the driver's seat and I don't want to re-hash the same things over and over. I take a unique approach to writing the music and I want to do the same with the lyrics (that I write) this round.

Instead of just movies, which I still take inspiration from, I think I need something more than that on this set of tunes. I'm going to the source of where some of these stories began. Whether it's the Salem witch trails, scalping of the Native Americans or stories of Benin; the birthplace of Voodoo. I want a 3-D effect in this album and I want it to leave the listener with an eerie, paranoid feeling.

SCAREMAKER are huge fans of the classic MISFITS. We recently stumbled upon this really cool web page that has pictures of all the cool merchandise that the old MISFITS fiend club used to offer! Check out all of this stuff and DROOL! It's also awesome to note that Danzig himself used to send hand written letters to customers sometimes. The amount of cool stuff this fan club offered back then was amazing, and it was done all through regular mailorder...no internet back then! How cool is that?!? You really had to SEARCH back then to find the cool stuff! Anyway, check out the page here for all of the fun!

TOMB TALES - obscure late 90's EC tribute comics

Around 1999, I stumbled upon some horror comics that I had never heard of before. I thought they were older from the 80's but it turned out they were from the late 90's. The series was called TOMB TALES and they were basically homages to the EC comics of the 50's. The art was in b/w and it was really great stuff! I've found these from various online comic web sites over the years. Not sure if the web site is still updated, but it's definitely still there! Check it out here to read more about what this obscure series was all about and try to track them down because they're worth it! -Billy

A massive collection of never-before-collected pre-Comics Code horror comics of the 1950s. Of the myriad genres comic books ventured into during its golden age, none was as controversial as or came at a greater cost than horror; the public outrage it incited almost destroyed the entire industry. Yet before the watchdog groups and Congress could intercede, horror books were flying off the newsstands. During its peak period (1951-54) over fifty titles appeared each month. Apparently there was something perversely irresistible about these graphic excursions into our dark side, and Four Color Fear collects the finest of these into a single robust and affordable volume.

EC is the comic book company most fans associate with horror; its complete line has been reprinted numerous times, and deservedly so.
